How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is a 3,000 year old form of health care that, to this day, is used by more people than any other system of medicine. Acupuncture works by balancing the internal energies (“Chi”) that flow through our bodies. When these energies are flowing smoothly and harmoniously, health and well being are promoted. However, when the Chi becomes blocked or imbalanced (caused by life stresses over time), symptoms of dis-ease result. Acupuncture then, treats the deeper, underlying imbalance, rather than just the symptom. When the underlying imbalance is addressed, not only does the main symptom often resolve, but other areas of a person’s life tend to improve and flourish as well.

What are the Benefits of Acupuncture?

The benefits of Traditional Acupuncture are far-reaching. Although it is said that: “Traditional Acupuncture does not treat symptoms; it treats people,” the World Health Organization of the U.N. lists over 40 symptoms that acupuncture has been shown to be effective in treating.  Some of the more common difficulties that people find relief from, through acupuncture, are:

In addition to relief of symptoms, some other benefits from treatment often reported are: increased energy and vitality; tend to get sick less often and recover more quickly; deeper and more harmonious relationships with others; a better understanding of oneself, thus better able take care of one’s own health; and a richer quality of life.

What About Needles?

The needles used to stimulate acupuncture points bears little resemblance to hypodermic syringes. Acupuncture needles are very slender, barely beyond the thickness of a human hair. The finest quality stainless steel, pre-sterilized, disposable needles are used. Most insertions are just below the skin’s surface and the sensations felt vary from person to person. Sometimes a person feels nothing at all, or perhaps a slightly dull, momentary ache or tingling. Most people actually find the treatments very relaxing. The fewest number of needles necessary are used, often to or three. What Is The Course of Treatment? The initial visit is a 1 ½ to 2 hour examination which includes a thorough history and physical. Subsequent treatment sessions are usually 1 hour. Generally a person will come weekly in order to promote an internal harmony which can be maintained between treatments. As this harmony is achieved, usually after 4-8 weeks, treatments are extended to every other week, monthly, and eventually seasonally. Because each person is unique, the frequency of treatment varies with each individual.
